The effect is, in fact, existent [in its cause] because: (1) nonexistence cannot be produced, (2) the material (cause) is selected for the effect, (3) all effects cannot be produced from all causes, (4) a cause produces that of which it is capable, and (5) [the effect is] of the same nature as the cause.
